Tina Okpara, author of My Life Has A Price was interviewed by Franck Berteau, the journalist at French news outlet L’Express. The topic for the interview was modern slavery and Okpara’s experiences in the Okpara household. Here is an excerpt of her response to her missing school:
« Rien ne me fait plus souffrir que de ne pas avoir été à l’école. C’était pour cela que mon père m’avait fait venir en France. Il savait que la famille Okpara avait les moyens de me donner ce que lui ne pouvait pas m’offrir, les études, un avenir. Mon rêve était de devenir infirmière. Si j’avais été à l’école, peut- être aurais-je pu le réaliser » (Nothing hurts me more than not being able to have gone to school. It was the reason my father sent me to France. He knew that the Okpara famly had the means to provide me with what he could not: an education, a future).
